Product Description

Engineered for Maximum Reliability and Extended Service Life

In the demanding world of mining and cement production, the drive pinion is a mission-critical component. As the input for the entire mill powertrain, it is subjected to immense torque, extreme shock loads, and a highly abrasive environment. Pinion failure leads to catastrophic downtime, resulting in significant production losses.

Yile Machinery manufactures forged, hardened, and precision-ground mill pinions designed to meet and exceed the challenges of 24/7 operation. We focus on superior materials and advanced manufacturing processes to deliver pinions that maximize uptime and reduce your total cost of ownership.

The Path to a Superior Mill Pinion: Our Manufacturing Process

A pinion's ability to resist wear and fatigue failure is determined by how it is made. Our process is optimized at every stage for maximum durability.

Superior Material & Forging:

  • We start with a solid, forged blank of high-quality, certified alloy steel, such as 42CrMo4 (AISI 4140) or case-hardening grades like 18CrNiMo7-6 (AISI 4320) .

  • The forging process refines the grain structure, eliminating the internal defects found in castings and providing superior toughness to resist shock loads.

Advanced Heat Treatment:

  • This is the most critical step for wear life. The pinion undergoes a precise case hardening (carburizing) and quenching process.

  • Benefit: This creates a rock-hard, wear-resistant surface (typically 58-62 HRC) on the gear teeth to fight abrasion, while maintaining a softer, ductile core that can absorb the immense torque and shock loading without fracturing.

Precision Gear Machining & Profile Grinding:

  • After heat treatment, the gear teeth are profile ground on a CNC grinding machine.

  • Benefit: Grinding corrects any minor distortions from the hardening process and produces a highly accurate tooth profile and an exceptionally smooth surface finish. This ensures perfect contact with the girth gear, reducing contact stress, minimizing noise and vibration, and dramatically extending the service life of both the pinion and the girth gear.

Engineered to Your Specifications

We manufacture pinions to OEM specifications or from custom drawings. We can also reverse-engineer your existing pinion to produce a dimensionally identical replacement with superior metallurgy.

  • Gear Type: Helical (single or double) and Spur

  • Material: Through-hardened (42CrMo4) or Case-hardened (18CrNiMo7-6) alloy steels

  • Module: Custom manufactured to match your existing girth gear

  • Bore: Can be supplied with a straight or tapered bore, keyways, or prepared for a shrink fit.

Uncompromising Quality for Mission-Critical Service

We understand that there is no room for error. Every mill pinion is subjected to a rigorous quality assurance protocol.

  • 100% Ultrasonic Testing (UT) on the forged blank to ensure it is free of internal flaws.

  • Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) on all finished gear teeth to guarantee no surface cracks.

  • Gear Quality Inspection: Full dimensional and geometric inspection of the gear teeth to ensure compliance with AGMA or ISO standards.

  • Documentation: We provide a complete quality documentation package, including Material Test Reports (MTRs), heat treatment charts, and final inspection reports.

Applications

Our heavy-duty pinions are the preferred choice for driving large, rotating equipment in heavy industry:

  • Ball Mills

  • SAG Mills (Semi-Autogenous Grinding)

  • Rod Mills

  • Cement Kilns & Grinding Mills

  • Rotary Dryers & Coolers
