Product Description

The Drum Coupling is a specialized, high-torque gear coupling engineered specifically for the demanding environment of cranes, hoists, and winches. Its unique design provides a compact and robust connection directly between the gearbox output shaft and the rope drum, forming a critical link in the main lifting mechanism.

Yile Machinery manufactures these couplings from high-strength forged steel to ensure maximum safety, reliability, and service life in the most critical lifting operations.

Design and Function: A Direct Drive for Rope Drums

A drum coupling is a type of flanged sleeve gear coupling with a specific design purpose. It consists of two main parts:

  1. Outer Sleeve with Internal Gear: This larger component features a wide flange that is bolted directly to the crane's rope drum. Its internal teeth are crowned (curved) to accommodate misalignment.

  2. Inner Hub with External Gear: This component is mounted on the output shaft of the gearbox. Its external crowned gear teeth mesh with the outer sleeve.

This configuration creates a direct, floating connection that transmits immense torque while compensating for the inevitable misalignments that occur in large, flexing crane structures.

Key Features & Advantages

  • Direct Drum Connection: Eliminates the need for an intermediate shaft, creating a more compact, rigid, and efficient drive system.

  • Exceptional Torque Capacity: Engineered to handle the massive torque required for lifting heavy loads.

  • Accommodates Misalignment: The crowned gear teeth allow for significant angular and axial misalignment, protecting the gearbox bearings from damaging radial loads.

  • Robust Forged Steel Construction: Provides superior strength, impact resistance, and fatigue life compared to cast iron or standard steel couplings, which is critical for safety in lifting applications.

  • Enhanced Safety and Reliability: The secure, bolted connection and high-strength design ensure a fail-safe link between the drive and the drum.

Engineered for Maximum Reliability

Our drum couplings are built to withstand the harshest industrial conditions.

  • Material: Manufactured from Forged 42CrMo or 45# Alloy Steel, chosen for its high tensile strength and toughness.

  • Crowned Gear Teeth: All gear teeth are precision-machined with a crowned profile to ensure even load distribution, minimize wear, and maximize misalignment capability.

  • Heat Treatment: Components undergo a rigorous heat treatment process (quenching and tempering) to optimize hardness, strength, and wear resistance.

  • Sealed for Lubrication: The assembly is designed to be filled with grease and sealed with O-rings to ensure continuous lubrication of the gear teeth and protect against contamination.

Primary Applications in Lifting Equipment

Drum couplings are the standard solution for the main hoist drive on:

  • Overhead Cranes (EOT Cranes)

  • Gantry Cranes

  • Port and Shipyard Cranes (STS, RTG)

  • Steel Mill Ladle Cranes and Charging Cranes

  • Heavy-Duty Industrial Winches
