Product Description

The girth gear and pinion set is the primary drive system for the largest rotating machinery in the world. As the component responsible for turning multi-thousand-ton rotary kilns and grinding mills, its strength, reliability, and precision are paramount. A failure in the gear drive results in catastrophic operational and financial losses.

Yile Machinery is a specialized manufacturer of heavy-duty girth gears and pinion shafts engineered to withstand the extreme stresses of cement, mining, and mineral processing applications.

The Heart of Your Rotating Equipment: The Girth Gear

The girth gear (or ring gear) is a massive, open-style gear that is mounted directly onto the shell of a rotary kiln, ball mill, or dryer. Due to their immense size, they are typically manufactured in two, four, or more segments for ease of transport and installation.

Our Girth Gear Manufacturing Process:
  1. Material Excellence: We use high-strength cast steels like ZG45 and ZG42CrMo, which are specifically formulated for large, high-torque gear applications.

  2. Quality Casting: The gear segments are produced using advanced casting simulation and techniques to ensure a flawless internal structure, free from defects.

  3. Normalizing Heat Treatment: After casting, the gear segments undergo a crucial normalizing or quenching & tempering heat treatment to refine the grain structure, relieve internal stresses, and achieve the desired mechanical properties for strength and toughness.

  4. Precision Machining: The segments are machined on large-scale vertical lathes and heavy-duty gear hobbing machines to create precise spur or helical tooth profiles that guarantee smooth, efficient power transmission.

The Driving Force: The Pinion Shaft

The pinion is the smaller, driving gear that meshes with the girth gear. It rotates at a much higher speed and is subjected to intense contact stress. For this reason, the pinion must be manufactured with superior hardness and wear resistance.

Our Pinion Shaft Manufacturing Process:
  • Forged for Strength: We start with a high-quality forged alloy steel billet (e.g., 42CrMo / AISI 4140), which provides a superior grain structure and fatigue resistance compared to bar stock.

  • Hardening Heat Treatment: After rough machining, the pinion undergoes a quenching and tempering process to achieve a high surface hardness on the gear teeth while maintaining a tough, ductile core to absorb shock loads.

  • Precision Grinding: The gear teeth and bearing journals are precision ground to ensure perfect geometry, an excellent surface finish, and a precise mesh with the girth gear for long service life.

Applications in Heavy Industry

Our custom-manufactured girth gear and pinion sets are essential for the operation of:

  • Cement Plants: For rotary kilns, raw mills, and cement mills.

  • Mining & Mineral Processing: For ball mills, SAG mills, and AG mills used in grinding ore.

  • Chemical & Fertilizer Industries: For rotary dryers and granulators.
