A typical multi-speed gearbox assembly consists of two primary parallel shafts:
The Main Shaft (Input/Output Shaft):
This shaft transmits power into and out of the gearbox. It often holds the synchronizers and clutch gears that are engaged by the operator to select a speed. Its straight-line design is critical for efficient power flow.
The Countershaft (Layshaft or "Auxiliary" Shaft):
Running parallel to the main shaft, the countershaft holds a set of fixed gears that are in constant mesh with gears on the main shaft. The different gear pairings on the countershaft are what create the various gear ratios.
