Product Description

Jaw couplings are one of the most popular types of general-purpose flexible shaft couplings in the world. Their simple three-piece design—consisting of two metal hubs and an elastomeric insert (often called a "spider")—makes them a reliable and cost-effective choice for a wide range of motion control and power transmission applications.

Yile Machinery specializes in providing jaw couplings with custom bore configurations, including combinations of splined and keyed shafts, to perfectly match your equipment needs.

Principle of Operation: Simple, Reliable, and Fail-Safe

The power in a jaw coupling is transmitted between two interlocking hubs that are separated by a flexible elastomeric spider. This design provides several key advantages:

  • Vibration Damping & Shock Absorption: The spider acts as a cushion, absorbing shock loads and damping driveline vibrations, which protects bearings and extends the life of connected equipment like motors and pumps.

  • Misalignment Compensation: The flexible spider allows the coupling to accommodate small amounts of shaft misalignment (angular, parallel, and axial).

  • Fail-Safe Design: If the spider eventually wears out and fails, the jaws of the two hubs will interlock for a direct metal-to-metal drive. This allows the machinery to continue running temporarily (though it will be noisy) so a shutdown can be scheduled, preventing catastrophic failure and sudden downtime.

Advantage: Clamp-Style Hubs for Easy Installation

While the original title mentions "quick release," the correct term for this feature is a clamp-style or split hub. Unlike standard couplings that use set screws (which can damage the shaft), clamp-style hubs use one or more screws to tighten the hub radially around the shaft.

Benefits of Clamp-Style Hubs:

  • Easy Installation & Removal: Can be slid on and tightened without the need for special tools or hammering.

  • No Shaft Damage: Provides a secure, 360-degree grip without marring the shaft surface with set screws.

  • Excellent Holding Power: Distributes the clamping force evenly for a strong, slip-free connection.

Custom Bores and Material Options

We manufacture jaw couplings to your exact specifications.

  • Hub Materials:

    • Cast Iron: A cost-effective choice for general-purpose applications.

    • Steel / Forged Steel: For higher torque, higher speed, and heavy-duty applications.

  • Custom Bore Configurations: We can machine hubs to fit any combination of shafts, including:

    • Splined Bores: To match the splined output shafts of hydraulic pumps and motors.

    • Keyed Bores: Standard straight or tapered bores with keyways.

  • Spider Materials: The spider can be chosen to match the application's needs for damping, torque, and temperature resistance. Common materials include:

    • NBR (Buna-N): The most common choice, offering the best damping properties.

    • Urethane: For higher torque capacity and better wear resistance.

    • Hytrel®: For high-temperature and high-torque applications.

Common Applications

Jaw couplings are true general-purpose couplings, used in nearly every industry for:

  • Connecting motors to pumps

  • Conveyor systems

  • Fans and blowers

  • Gearbox connections

  • General machinery and automation equipment
