Manufacturing Process for Maximum Durability

The long life of a worm gear set depends on the perfect combination of materials and precision manufacturing. We control every step for both components.

1. The Worm (Hardened Steel)

The worm's threads must be extremely hard and smooth to resist wear.

  • Material: We start with high-quality alloy steels like 42CrMo (4140) or carburizing steels like 20CrMnTi.

  • Heat Treatment: The worm undergoes carburizing or induction hardening to create a case hardness of 58-62 HRC.

  • Precision Grinding: After hardening, the worm threads are precision-ground to achieve a perfect profile and an exceptionally smooth surface finish, which is critical for reducing friction and wear on the bronze wheel.

2. The Worm Wheel (High-Quality Bronze)

The worm wheel is designed to be the conformable, sacrificial element in the pair. Its material is key to the system's success.

  • Material: We use high-performance bearing bronzes, typically Tin Bronze (e.g., ZCuSn10Pb1) or Aluminum Bronze. These alloys offer an excellent combination of strength and low friction against hardened steel.

  • Casting: For superior material integrity, the bronze ring is often produced via centrifugal casting, which eliminates porosity and creates a dense, uniform grain structure.

  • Precision Hobbing: The teeth are cut into the bronze blank using a specialized CNC gear hobbing machine to ensure a perfect mesh with the worm.
