Product Description
For applications where high strength and low weight are critical, a forged hollow shaft is the superior engineering choice. By removing the non-essential material from the center, a hollow shaft offers a significantly better strength-to-weight ratio and lower rotational inertia compared to a solid shaft of the same outer diameter.
Yile Machinery is a specialized manufacturer of custom forged and machined hollow shafts, engineered from high-tensile alloy steels like 34CrMo for demanding industrial applications.
Choosing a hollow shaft design provides distinct performance benefits, especially in dynamic systems.
Superior Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Delivers maximum torsional strength with minimum mass.
Reduced Rotational Inertia: Allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, improving machine efficiency.
Lower Overall Weight: Reduces the load on bearings and supporting structures.
Design Flexibility: The internal bore can be used as a channel for coolants, lubricants, or other components.
When combined with the forging process, which refines the steel's grain structure for enhanced fatigue resistance, the result is a shaft that is both strong and exceptionally durable.
We manufacture these shafts from 34CrMo (also designated as 34CrMo4, 1.7220, or similar to AISI 4135) . This versatile chromium-molybdenum alloy steel is chosen for high-stress components due to its excellent combination of properties:
High Tensile Strength & Toughness
Good Hardenability through quenching and tempering
Excellent Fatigue and Torsional Strength
This makes 34CrMo the ideal material for a hollow shaft that must withstand high torque and cyclic loads without failure.
Each shaft is manufactured to your exact drawings and quality requirements through a controlled, multi-stage process.
Forging & Piercing: We start with a certified steel billet, which is forged to shape. The hollow bore is created either through a piercing process during forging or by deep-hole drilling of the solid forged bar.
Heat Treatment: The shaft undergoes a quenching and tempering (Q&T) process to achieve the precise mechanical properties (hardness, tensile strength, toughness) required by your application.
Precision CNC Machining: The heat-treated hollow shaft is then precision machined on our CNC lathes and mills. We create all features to tight tolerances, including:
Bearing Journals
Keyways and Splines
Flanges and Tapers
Final Inspection: Every finished shaft is subjected to rigorous quality control, including full dimensional inspection and non-destructive testing (NDT) to ensure its integrity.
