Product Description
The worm shaft is the driving component in a worm gear set, subjected to immense sliding friction and contact stress. The quality of its design and manufacturing is paramount. Yile Machinery specializes in producing high-precision, hardened, and ground worm shafts from superior alloy steels like AISI 4140 (42CrMo) , ensuring smooth, quiet, and long-lasting power transmission.
Creating a worm shaft that can endure millions of cycles without failure requires a meticulous engineering process focused on metallurgy and precision finishing.
We start with certified AISI 4140 / 42CrMo steel, a chromium-molybdenum alloy renowned for its toughness, fatigue strength, and excellent response to heat treatment. This ensures the shaft has the core strength to handle high torque loads without deformation.
A worm shaft requires two distinct properties: a tough core to absorb shock and an ultra-hard surface to resist wear. We achieve this through a two-stage heat treatment:
Quenching & Tempering (Q&T): The entire shaft is heat-treated to refine its grain structure and develop high core strength and toughness.
Induction Hardening: We then use a high-frequency induction process to harden only the worm threads to a depth and hardness (typically 50-55 HRC) optimized for wear resistance against a bronze or cast iron worm wheel.
After hardening, the worm threads are finished using specialized thread grinding machines. This is the key step that separates a high-performance worm from a standard one. Grinding ensures:
Exceptional Surface Finish (Low Ra): Creates a mirror-like surface that drastically reduces friction, heat, and wear.
Perfect Thread Profile Accuracy: Guarantees precise meshing with the worm wheel for smooth, efficient power transfer.
Elimination of Heat Treatment Distortion: Corrects any minor distortions that may occur during the hardening process.
A worm shaft is one half of a system. Its hardened steel surface is designed to work with a softer worm wheel material, typically:
Tin Bronze or Aluminum Bronze: For high-load, high-speed applications.
Ductile Cast Iron: For lower-speed, intermittent, or high-torque applications.
We can advise on the correct material pairing or manufacture the complete worm and wheel set for you.
