Unlike other steels, high manganese steel (typically containing 11-14% manganese) possesses a remarkable property called work hardening.
In its initial state, the steel is relatively soft and extremely tough, allowing it to absorb massive impacts without fracturing.
Under repeated impact or high-pressure abrasion, the surface layer transforms, becoming incredibly hard (up to 550 BHN). This hard surface constantly renews itself as the component wears.
