Product Description

For massive equipment like mining shovels, draglines, and large-scale cranes, a single-piece slewing ring is often too large to forge, transport, or install. The solution is a segmented slewing ring—a high-precision assembly of multiple forged gear segments that form a complete, large-diameter track for the machine's rotation.

Yile Machinery is a specialist in manufacturing these critical, heavy-duty ring gear segments, engineered for maximum load capacity and service life in the world's most demanding applications.

Manufacturing Process for Unmatched Strength & Precision

The reliability of a multi-million dollar piece of equipment depends on the integrity of each slewing ring segment. Our manufacturing process is focused on delivering superior mechanical properties and perfect interchangeability.

  1. Open-Die Forging: Each segment begins as a high-quality alloy steel ingot, which is forged to shape. The forging process refines the steel's grain structure, eliminating internal defects and creating a component with exceptional strength and resistance to impact and fatigue.

  2. Quenching & Tempering: After forging, the entire segment undergoes a full-body heat treatment process (quenching and tempering) to establish the core strength, toughness, and durability required to handle immense operational loads.

  3. Precision Gear Machining: Using large-format CNC milling and gear hobbing machines, we cut the gear teeth to precise specifications, ensuring a smooth, accurate mesh with the drive pinions. Mounting holes and mating faces are also machined to tight tolerances for a seamless assembly.

  4. Gear Tooth Induction Hardening: This is the most critical step for wear life. The gear teeth surfaces are selectively hardened using an induction heating process, followed by a controlled quench. This creates an extremely hard, wear-resistant surface on the teeth while maintaining the toughness of the gear's core.

Materials & Quality Assurance

  • High-Strength Alloy Steels: We typically utilize robust CrMo alloy steels such as 42CrMo (AISI 4140) for our gear segments, a material renowned for its excellent balance of strength, toughness, and hardenability.

  • Rigorous Inspection: Every segment is subjected to a strict quality control regimen, including:

    • Dimensional verification with CMM or laser trackers.

    • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) to guarantee freedom from sub-surface flaws.

    • Hardness testing to verify the heat treatment results.

Applications for Heavy Rotating Machinery

Our segmented slewing rings are the foundation for rotation in a wide range of heavy equipment:

  • Electric Mining Shovels & Hydraulic Excavators

  • Walking Draglines

  • Stacker-Reclaimers and Bucket-Wheel Excavators

  • Ship-to-Shore (STS) Cranes and Large Gantry Cranes

  • Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)

  • Large Radar and Antenna Installations
