Our Manufacturing Process for Mission-Critical Output Shafts

We combine premium materials with a multi-stage manufacturing and quality control process to produce output shafts you can depend on.

  1. Material Sourcing & Forging: We start with certified high-tensile alloy steels like 42CrMo (AISI 4140) or 34CrNiMo6 (AISI 4340) . The material is forged to create a refined internal grain structure, providing the toughness required to handle shock loads.

  2. Advanced Heat Treatment: The forged blank undergoes a sophisticated heat treatment cycle:

    • Quenching & Tempering: This through-hardening process develops the shaft's core strength and ductility.

    • Surface Hardening (Induction or Carburizing): The gear teeth and spline surfaces are selectively hardened to 58-62 HRC. This creates an incredibly wear-resistant outer layer while the core remains tough and resilient.

  3. Precision Machining & Gear Grinding:

    • The shaft is rough and finish-turned on high-precision CNC lathes.

    • Splines (involute, straight-sided, etc.) are cut using gear shaping or hobbing.

    • Gear teeth are cut via CNC hobbing.

    • For ultimate precision and quiet operation, the gear teeth are profile ground after hardening to correct any minor distortions and achieve a superior surface finish.

  4. Rigorous Quality Assurance:

    • Material Integrity: 100% Ultrasonic (UT) and Magnetic Particle (MT) inspection to guarantee the shaft is free from any internal or surface defects.

    • Dimensional Verification: CMM inspection of gear profile, lead, helix angle, and all critical shaft diameters and tolerances.

    • Hardness Confirmation: Testing to verify surface and core hardness specifications are met.
