The Unmatched Performance of High-Manganese Steel
High-manganese steel (also known as Hadfield steel or Mangalloy) is the material of choice for severe-duty wear applications. Its unique metallurgical property is work-hardening.
Initial State: In its as-cast and heat-treated state, the steel is relatively ductile and tough.
Under Impact: When the surface is subjected to repeated impact or high-stress abrasion (like from rock or ore), the crystalline structure of the steel transforms, creating an extremely hard, wear-resistant outer layer.
The Result: The component develops a hard working surface (up to 550 BHN) while the underlying material remains tough and ductile, preventing it from cracking under shock loads. This dual property makes it far superior to other steels for grinding mill applications.
We commonly cast with standard and modified austenitic manganese steel alloys, including:
ASTM A128 Grade B-2 (Mn13)
